Transparency International Ukraine and the Anticorruption Action Center will hold the international conference on the returning of assets, stolen by corrupt political elite on 15-16 December in the President Hotel. The conference will be attended by 30 international experts, specialists from the U.S. Federal Investigation Bureau, and the International Monetary Fund. They will decide on the best way to return stolen assets, detection and arrests of the owners, and to investigate crimes on illegal enrichment.

Today, the Ukrainian legislation has all necessary tools to punish those who abuse their positions. The assets, illegally appropriated by officials or owners of failed banks, are funds which must be used for the country’s development.

During the Conference, international specialists will settle on the use of these specific  tools. The aim is to break the deadlock in investigating criminal proceedings on Yanukovych and his associates, as well as in the proceedings of failed banks. Transparency International Ukraine and partners demand proper reporting from the Prosecutor’s Office on these cases.

The issue on returning Yanukovych’s funds will be given priority  as it is one of the major priorities of TI Ukraine. Jose Ugaz, the Chairman of Transparency International stressed the need to work on the assets return from the former President and assured that TI would help Ukrainian law enforcement bodies achieving it.

The event is unique in that no one in Ukraine dedicate events to practical issues of arrest, confiscation and administration of the assets, received under corrupt offenses.

Foreign experts will hold work and training modules for Ukrainian law enforcement officers, detectives and prosecutors. For the first time, the experts will train Ukrainian activists on how to regain assets and money of corrupt officials via court appeals.

The conference will be opened by Hugh Mingarelli, Head of EU representative office in Ukraine, Guillaume Scheurer, the Ambassador of Switzerland to Ukraine and Moldova and Pavlo Petrenko, the Minister of Justice. It is expected that the Conference will be attended by Marie Yovanovitch, the Ambassador of the USA in Ukraine and Yurii Lutsenko, the General Prosecutor of Ukraine.
