Recently, the NABU has appealed to the Anti-Corruption Court with a request to grant permission for the investigation of Oleksandr Dubilet in absentia. He is suspected of embezzling about UAH 8 bln from PrivatBank before the bank’s nationalization in 2016.

On October 28, 2021, the HACC granted the request and allowed Dubilet to be investigated in absentia. Thus, special provisions of the Criminal Procedural Code will be applied to Dubilet, which were developed for cases when the physical presence of the person involved in the case is impossible.

Let us remind you that in March 2021, the NABU announced Dubilet was wanted, and in the summer, the SAPO applied to Interpol with the same request. The fact is that in December 2020, he went abroad and has not yet returned. At the same time, during the interrogation, the NABU said that his place of residence was Dnipro.

Now, Dubilet is probably in Israel. He stated that he had left Ukraine not because of criminal proceedings. However, he cannot return to Ukraine due to “epidemiological restrictions and military operations.”

Dubilet’s lawyers are against an investigation in absentia because it may violate his rights, and also because Dubilet does not seem to have acquired the status of a suspect, is not put on the international wanted list, and is not hiding.
