On September 14, panel discussion The Media’s Role in Fighting Corruption will be held at the opening of the Cinema Against Corruption festival. Among the attendees – guests from Germany and Romania, Ukrainian investigative journalists and managers of anti-corruption civic organizations.
There will be special guests speaking at event: Benjamin Best from Germany, the director of Dirty Games, the opening movie of the festival, and Romanian journalist and director Yevgeniya Kironaki. Other participants of the discussion include authors of Ukrainian journalistic investigations as well as representatives of CO Anticorruption Action Center, Transparency International Ukraine and the NABU. The event will be hosted by Crisis Media Center on September 14.
Benjamin Best is a journalist and director, winner of numerous awards, including CNN Journalist of the Year (2011). His documentary Dirty Games that tells about the dark side of top-class sports received the prize for best documentary, best camerawork and best editing at cinema forums in Hollywood, Lausanne, London, Milan and New York. Yevgeniya Kironaki has filmed human rights documentaries about problems faced by orphans, drug users, prisoners, Romani people, the poor during her 13-year experience as a journalist. Yevgeniya works have received a number of awards at television festivals in Romania, Europe and other parts of the world. Special guests are expected at the opening of the festival in Kyiv.
Cinema Against Corruption will also include screenings of investigative films by Ukrainian journalists. Kyiv – London. From Ukraine with Cash by Nataliia Sedletska and Maksym Savchuk tells about the journalist’s travel to the British capital in search of real estate owned by politicians and oligarchs who made their money in Ukraine, profiting off of Ukrainians, but keep and spend the money in the UK. The investigation conducted by the journalists of Nashi Hroshi (Our Money) TV show reveals illegal land machinations of the former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Serhiy Chebotar. In the film Killing Pavel, journalists from the Slidstvo.Info project and their colleagues from the international network OCCRP investigate the death of journalist Pavel Sheremet, whose car exploded in the center of Kyiv in July 2016. The screening will take place in Kyiv on September 16 with filmmakers participating.
The festival starts on September 14, taking place in 6 Ukrainian cities: Kyiv, Kryvyi Rih, Poltava, Sievierodonetsk, Zhytomyr and Zaporizhia. The program includes six European films that investigate the nature of corruption. All the screenings are free; prior registration at noncorruption.org.ua is required. The opening of the festival will be hosted by Kyivska Rus theater in Kyiv. After Ukraine, the festival will take place in Moldova on October 19-21.
