The Ukrainian chapter of the global anti-corruption movement Transparency International invites representatives of Sievierodonetsk city authorities to register for the training How to Improve Mariupol’s Position in the City Transparency Ranking. It will be held as part of the project Make the City Transparent, Take Part in Governance. The event will take place on November 13 from 9AM to 7PM in Myr hotel at 1 Lysychanska street, Sieviedoronetsk.

Sievierodonetsk takes 73rd place in the Transparency Ranking of 100 Ukrainian cities. The city got only 22.5 out of 100 possible points. That is why TI Ukraine decided to work on mitigating corruption risks and building transparency in this city. The project also includes exchange of best practices among authorities of Mariupol, Melitopol and Irpin. The aforementioned cities are also hosting similar trainings. Besides, awareness campaign in the streets of these cities are held to tell the citizens how to demand accountability from the authorities – they have already taken place in Mariupol and Melitopol.
The educational event for Sievierodonetsk authorities will be held by trainer of International Republican Institute and expert of Institute of Political Education Taras Sluchyk. The participants will learn how to improve transparency of various areas of accountability of the local authorities, they will be told how to improve transparency in the areas of informing the public on the work of the local authorities, access and participation, muicipal property, grants and finances, as well as best pratices of land use.
The training aims at raising awareness among Sievierodonetsk officials of principles of accountability as well as developing the culture of transparency in the municipality. TI Ukraine representatives want to start a dialogue with the local authorities for implementation of the recommendations how to improve transparency.
Now, decentralization is underway in Ukraine, which presupposes transfer of authority and budget earnings to the local level. While city budgets have become more independent thanks to this process, corruption risks are one of the key threats for effective local self-government. That is why TI Ukraine continues to work on transparency in the regions of Ukraine and actively motivate local public officials to adhere to principles of transparency and accountability.
