Brief case description

On February 6, 2019, NABU detectives began investigating possible abuse of office by Viktor Sysa, Director of the Gutianskyi forestry Department. It was about the possible alienation of significant volumes of unaccounted-for wood and the sale of timber at low prices in favor of companies controlled by him.

On October 30, 2019, Sysa was detained for offering $100,000 to a NABU detective. According to the investigators, he offered this money for assistance in closing criminal proceedings.

On November 2, 2019, the HACC chose the pretrial restriction measure in the form of detention, setting bail at UAH 5,000,000.

On July 15, 2020, during the preparatory court session, the defense asked to cancel the seizure of the property belonging the accused and his wife, which the court refused.

Qualification

The accused is charged with Article 369, part 3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, i.e. offer, promise or provision of undue benefit to a public official who holds a particularly responsible position.

 

Case timeline

On June 18, 2020, the HACC received the indictment in criminal proceeding No. 52019000000000906 from the Prosecutor General’s Office.

On June 19, 2020, the preliminary court hearing is scheduled.

On July 15, 2020, the indictment is reviewed and the interim measure in the form of personal obligation is continued.
