The Ukrainian chapter of the global anti-corruption network Transparency International invites activists, journalists and everyone interested in transparency to participate in the training in Mariupol “How Can a Regular Person Influence the Authorities?” At the event, representatives of the public will gain theoretical knowledge and practical tools which they can use to influence local authorities and increase transparency of their city.
The training will take place in Mariupol on February 19 at Poseidon Hotel at Mariupol, 19 Primorsky Bulvar. Check-in from 9.00 AM to 9.30 AM
Prior participant registration is required: https://goo.gl/forms/nLVcAr5KCUGKH5Pl1. Registration deadline: February 15th.
The training will be delivered by Olha Omelchuk – Master of Public Administration, lawyer, expert on local development, city mayor of Netishyn (2010-1012).
Together with the participants, she will focus on how to monitor budget and control the work of utilities.
Mariupol ranks 5th in the transparency ranking of 100 Ukrainian cities, having risen from the 57th place after following our recommendations. The city got only 53.55 points out of 100. It scored the highest points in the area of information on the work of municipal authorities – 7.3 points, as well as in the area of municipal property, having received 6.2 points. However, the city received 1 point in the area of social services. And also only 1.25 points in the area of housing policy.
Now that decentralization is underway in Ukraine, the local authorities are gaining more power and local budgets are becoming more independent. That is why it is essential to develop mechanisms of monitoring and public control which would prevent corruption on the local level.
The project Make the City Transparent, Take Part in Governance is implemented by TI Ukraine together with the Center for Democracy and Rule of Law as part of the project Strengthening the RPR Coalition implemented with the support of the EU.
